The Dexter City Park has a brand new barn theme playground equipment, a shelter house which can be reserved at no charge for events throughout the year, restrooms, and picnic tables and benches, as well as a Life Trail Walkway that surrounds the park with seven interactive Life Trail stations displaying guided strength training and stretching exercises.

Our new “Life Trail” walkway and exercise equipment provided to the city, supported by the funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Building Health Communities in Iowa through Harkin Wellness Grants and through the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The Dexter Community House (known locally as the Roundhouse) was built in 1916 and is a treasure unique to Dexter. Elliptical in shape, the building with it’s 30 foot high ceiling has no inner supports and the builders worried more about keeping the roof from flying up than falling down. When the building was finished the builders drove a Model T around the roof to prove its soundness. Original architect, Major Matthew Leander King, is the grandfather of actor Nick Nolte. The building was paid for through subscription and pledges and has been host to plays, sporting events, auctions, music show, dances, weddings and other events over its nearly 90 years of life. Today the Dexter Community House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and named as one of Iowa’s 10 most- endangered historic buildings, continues to be the cornerstone of the community and invites one to come inside and marvel at its architectural uniqueness.http://www.geocities.com/dexterroundhouse/dexterroundhouse.html

The Dexter Historical Museum is open when the U. S. Flag is displayed. We invite you to learn about Dexter’s past, and discover the history of the town, whose path has mixed with Bonnie &Clyde and Presidents Taft and Truman. Learn about the birthplace of the Dexter Washing Machine, a place called Dexfield Park, The National Plowing Match which was the site of the first major speech of Harry S Truman’s 1948 whistle stop campaign, and the interesting history of the people whom have called Dexter home.

Beaver Lake a 41 acre state DNR lake,  is located just outside Dexter and offers excellent fishing, is handicap accessible and permits small watercrafts.

Downtown Dexter is proud of it’s historic downtown district, with it’s unique builddings and small town charm. Opportunities abound for new business, shop owners and retail space. With easy access to Interstate 80 and rail service and open green space in the area, Dexter is a great choice for any company looking for a dependable and solid work- force to expand manufacturing or building new industry,

Dexter’s mix of old and new homes along its peaceful streets are a great part of the health and vitality of our residents!

White Pole Road, this 26- mile scenic byway is easy to identify with more than  700 painted white poles  marking the route from Dexter to Adair along former U. S. Highway 6.

This historic route follows one of Iowa’s earliest sections of “good roads”, once known as “The  Great White Way” stretching from Council Bluffs to Davenport, Iowa.
