The Dexter Community House
(known locally as the Roundhouse) was built in 1916 and is a treasure unique to
Dexter. Elliptical in shape, the building with it’s 30 foot high ceiling has
no inner supports and the builders worried more about keeping the roof from
flying up than falling down. When the building was finished the builders drove a
Model T around the roof to prove its soundness. Original architect, Major
Matthew Leander King, is the grandfather of actor Nick Nolte. The building was
paid for through subscription and pledges and has been host to plays, sporting
events, auctions, music show, dances, weddings and other events over its nearly
90 years of life. Today the Dexter Community House, listed on the National
Register of Historic Places and named as one of Iowa’s 10 most- endangered
historic buildings, continues to be the cornerstone of the community and invites
one to come inside and marvel at its architectural uniqueness.http://www.geocities.com/dexterroundhouse/dexterroundhouse.html
