March 3 @ 4:00 pm
There is little to say about this isolated wasteland at 15,500 feet except that it is my last stepping stone prior to my summit attempt in eight hours. Arriving to camp around noon gave me the afternoon to think about the upcoming events. Charles said that it is best to stay out of the sun at this altitude; due to the increased radiation climbers may become ill. Speaking of sickness, after popping almost every drug I possessed, my stomach issues became manageable. I did not eat much but I drank plenty of Gatorade …just like Mike!
It felt like home today. After arriving at camp, Charlie started disputing with a bunch of other porters regarding what country has the finest soccer team. It was all spoken is Swahili but I could deduce that there was a great deal of bullshit flying. I declare I was listening to a Tanzanian J.D.
The thinning oxygen is significantly making it difficult to breathe. Tonight as we depart for the summit it is simply going to worsen. Charles and I will begin the climb at midnight where some of the slower climbers will start at 11:00 pm. The pictures of my kids (Spencer and Laura), Nikki (Flat Stanley), and Tony holding a picture of Nikki in the Ukraine are all safely tucked into my pocket. If Julie would have bestowed me a picture as asked, that would be there too.
Before dinner Charles went over tonight's schedule, checked my breathing and overall health, and inspected my gear. After passing inspection he advised me to eat lightly than get some rest. How does someone sleep with the task that's ahead?
All right, either Americans have it all wrong or Tanzanians do. Goulash was on the menu which had a strong resemblance to chicken noodle soup. Unlike the chicken noodle soup served over the past few days, this soup (goulash) contained large morsels of chicken, noodles and vegetables. This was the best meal to date.
Even though this camp is a desolate place the view continues to be spectacular. The panorama of Mt. Mawenzi peaking through the clouds during the setting sun is stunning.

To my surprise I was able to catch a few winks. In another hour I will be heading up. Looks like a brilliant night. I'm not sure when I will write next, but wish me luck.
