WABASH TRACE NATURE TRAIL

Thirty-five miles southwest of Stanton--63-mile railroad trail from Council Bluffs, on the Missouri River, to Blanchard, on the Iowa-Missouri border. Outside magazine called this "one of the country's prettiest rails-to-trails conversions." Trail pass applications are available at the shop.)

VIKING LAKE STATE PARK

Four miles southeast of Stanton--Great camping facilities and swimming area. The White Tail Trail, a snowmobile trail, is great for bicycling. It is a grass trail almost two miles long overlooking Viking Lake, with bird feeders and salt blocks near a blind for observing birds and deer.

LAKE OF THREE FIRES STATE PARK

Lake of Three Fires State Park is about forty-five miles southeast of Stanton. It has an easy eight-mile horse trail, which is suitable for bicycle riding. This trail takes you around the lake, sidetracking around coves.

WAUBONSIE STATE PARK

Waubonsie State Park, with difficult horse trails on which mountain bikes can be ridden, is located about fifty miles southwest of Stanton. From an observation point you can see four states, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri.

PILOT GROVE COUNTY PARK

Thirteen miles northeast of Stanton--Camping, pond, short paved trail.

NODAWAY VALLEY PARK

A Page County Park twenty miles southeast of Stanton--Camping, moderate-difficulty mountain-bike trails.

 

Pick up route sheets and maps of rides ranging from 45 to 100 miles on hard-surfaced roads in this area. The shop also has copies of Iowa By Trail, a spiral-bound book of Iowa trails which can be carried in your bike bag, Midwest and National trail books, and other tour information.
