SAFETY SPORT MIRROR

This
is the Safety Sport Mirror, which I think is the best eyeglass
mirror on the market. Because of the
short arm that can be bent by the user for a custom fit and the small but
adequate mirror, there is no vibration from wind or rough road surfaces. The mirror itself is made of flat glass,
providing an undistorted view and accurate judgment of distance. It is encased
in a rubber mounting connected to an adjustment arm by a ball and socket
assembly that comes apart if dropped or stepped on.
Don’t take my word for
it; read TESTIMONIALS from satisfied mirror users.

I
bought my first Safety Sport Mirror through a Bicycling Magazine classified ad
(much earlier than the ten years mentioned erroneously in the article below),
and began selling them soon after I opened my bike shop in 1991. The inventor
and former owner has sold the mirror business to our local sheltered workshop
for the handicapped, Nishna Productions http://www.nishna.org/.
Its clients assemble and package the mirrors, at the Nishna Productions
facility in Red Oak, Iowa, my home town. Nishna Productions receives all the
profits on sales from this web site. I only handle the orders. See the article
below that was printed in the Nishna Productions newsletter at the time it
acquired the mirror business.

I love the mirror Wayne. Tried it this morning on our club ride
and it worked great. I thought I might have to adjust a little to it being
smaller but I see all I saw before with the bigger mirror which was a lot
larger. Great product, I will be sure to tell the people I ride with. Thanks a
bunch, Bonnie Lynch

Delon
Dalke, Yuma, Arizona:
I have
been using this mirror for nearly 20 years and broke mine last week. I did
not know it was still available until I did an Internet search yesterday.
I clearly agree that it is by far the best eyeglass mirror
available! I am so pleased that I have been able to again get the mirror,
as I have had to use a larger eyeglass frame mirror the last couple of days
while I am awaiting arrival of the mirror from you. The larger mirror actually
gives me a poorer view, as I cannot seem to get it properly adjusted, and I get
too much of my shoulder blocking the view.
Sharon Wilson, Decatur,
Texas:
I got my
mirror yesterday and it's WONDERFUL! It was a gift for my boyfriend and he
couldn't be more pleased. He has tried several others that he didn't
like. When I get my bike, I'll be ordering another one for me.
Patricia Elson,
Santa Clara, California, thought this mirror was no longer
available until she did an Internet search for it. She must be buying them for
her friends. This is a message she included with her order for four mirrors:
“I've been using a Safety Sport Mirror for the last 25 years. It is the
greatest! It is secure and precisely adjustable with the mirror in a spot where
you can easily see it, unlike some helmet-mounted mirrors. Thanks for making
these wonderful mirrors available. Please send me four mirrors.” (Pat later ordered five more mirrors)
John Enzweiler,
Moorpark, California:
I picked
up my first mirror on RAGBRAI many years ago. It still works fine
but I am ordering one for a friend so I thought I would get a new one at this
time. At this point I would have a hard time riding without a
mirror. Many thanks, John (John
later ordered ten mirrors)
Ron Fox, Clearwater, Florida:
Your
mirrors arrived on Friday. I tried it on Sat AM and it is very slick. Just like
you said - EZ on and EZ off. The view is very good too. I went for a ride in
the evening and it was good in low light too. I'll spread the word.

Nishna Productions,
Inc. Purchases
Safety
Sport Mirror Business!
Nishna
Productions, Inc. has purchased a Safety Sport Mirror business. This product
was developed to provide rear view sight to cyclists, rowers, and other sports
enthusiasts, who need to increase the safety of their activity. The mirror
attaches either to glasses or a helmet. Like eyes in the back of your head, the
Safety Sport Mirror allows you to play it safe.
The
business was developed as a major part of NPI's vision for the future. The
agency desires to implement a fiscal support system that is much less reliant
on taxpayer's dollars for continued existence. The plan's purpose is to enhance
the agency's ability to survive financially, and to create new employment
opportunities for people with disabilities.
The
business was purchased in 1998 and is being marketed this year. The parts are
being made by a vendor and then are assembled and packaged by NPI consumers.
Agency staff will be involved in the marketing of the finished product. This
product is part of a major plan for the agency to move toward the ownership
and management of several affirmative businesses in the community.
Historically, the business was
developed by David Chaney of Peach Tree, Georgia, ten years ago. Mr. Chaney got the idea when a truck hit his
bicycle from the rear. After seventeen days in the hospital and six months on
crutches, he went to work developing the Safety Sport Mirror. He was an avid
cyclist and marketed the mirror extensively. His biggest customer was Schwinn.
Over 300,000 units were sold before illness struck him, and he had little time
to promote the product. For the last few years, he has only serviced loyal
accounts.
(Correction by Wayne Donohue—It was
Peach Tree City, Georgia, and Dave began selling the mirror in 1973. His
accident was in about 1969.)
The idea
to purchase this business was given to NPI by Steve Adams, former Executive
Director of the Montgomery County Development Corporation, and Wayne Donohue,
owner of Donohue's Bicycle Shop in Stanton.
Grant
funding for technical assistance for business development has been obtained
through the Iowa Department of Economic Development Job Opportunities for
People with Disabilities Program. This has allowed NPI to hire Linda Cummings,
C/S Vocational Consultants, Ankeny, Iowa, and Lynn Adams, Fantasia Marketing,
Red Oak, Iowa, to help with product development and marketing.
The
market is growing with the popularity of bicycling and outdoor activities.
Bicycle trails and state cycling events are examples of this popularity. The
typical customer will be a safety-conscious person involved with outdoor
recreation. Initially, NPI has targeted local bike shops and the RAGBRAI event
in Iowa to market the product.
