Use the Grid
You can change the grid size in PSP.
Use the grid to keep track of your pixels.

File>Preferences>General Program Preferences then click on the Transparency Tab and change your Grid Size and Color Scheme.

I also like to use a color besides gray and white for the grid colors.  Reason is because gray is a common color for drawing pixel outlines.  I happen to use the blue and white grid that comes with psp, you can use any custom colors you want.  If you are drawing white pixel lines, you can change the white grid color to something darker so you can see what you are doing.

Zoom IN!
Enlarge your image or you will go blind  lol.
Click on the Image bar and scroll up to increase the image size, or click on the zoom button .

I have the grid size set on Medium so when I zoom in to 800% when pixeling(which is large enough for me so I don't squint and get a headache),one square on the grid is 2 pixels in length.  Makes it easier if you are counting long lines.

Pixel Tricks

To save time, you can draw whole segments by holding down the Shift key while you paint.  You can draw long lines this way and go diagonally.  It will even go a couple diagonally at at time.  Very good trick.

Color matching: hover your curser over a color and right click ( this works with the paint brush as well as flood fill)
