Kat-zilla Wins Nationals

in U.S. and Japan!

Kathrine Williams (Gilbertville, Iowa) won two national tournaments in two weeks - one in the U.S. and the other in Japan.

Kathrine celebrated her 14th birthday while in Japan by winning the 2006 Chubu Nationals in Yaizu City, Japan on March 26. Kathrine's record in the 15 and under girls 50+kg weight class was 3-0 with all matches being won by fall in the first period. She gave up only one takedown the entire tournament. Kathrine was invited to participate as part of a cultural exchange program. Her result caught the attention of the local organizers and she has been invited to compete in the Queen's Cup next year. The Queen's Cup is the premier women's tournament in Japan.

With only three days rest and a badly bruised knee, she then traveled to Lake Orion, Michigan to win her fourth USGWA national title. On April 2, she completed the Middle School 115 lb. division with a record of 6-0 including 5 falls, winning the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for her the middle school division.

Kathrine's record for the season is 78-0 and includes competing against both boys and girls in age group and high school division tournaments throughout the Midwestern United States, Canada, and Japan.

Kathrine currently practices with the Cedar Hawk Wrestling Club at Coe College.

With teams from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Estonia, Poland, and Kathrine representing the USA and Hawkeye Kids, the competition was fierce, but Kathrine wrestled strong and came away with a string of clean victories and first place. Kathrine also got a mention on the Danish national news when they ran a five minute piece on the tournament, stating that a US girls national champion had arrived to compete. There was also plenty of time to see the sites and enjoy Copenhagen. Kat says the best thing about Denmark is their pizza!

Less than a week later Kathrine became the 2004 IWF Greco-Roman State champion at Novice 105 to complete the Triple Crown. Kathrine is the first girl in Iowa to ever win this award.
