This show was a lot of fun, and went very well. For the past few weeks, I had been feeling like broadcasting a large noise set, which I finally got around to this week. I was pleased to be able to play a varied set, from the noiser end of electroacoustic tape work to the harsher side of drone. Making their It's Too Damn Early "debut" this week were Alien Death Form of ROIL NOISE, the circuit bending maestro XDUGEF, and Quetzocoatl of HAUNTED TRAIL. I also aired a few rarities (at least for my broadcasts)... artists Mnem, Knurl, Membranoids, and Komafuzz (who recently unsubscribed from this fine list). Next week, I will be continuing the noise with more Aghori Cup, Christine 23 Onna, Naturaliste, and DJ Smallcock. I also have a few things lined up that are really exciting-- a glitch ballet, some fantastic free improv work, and some of China's best sound artists. I hope you will join me.

This week's show was very nice. Having just heard some newer Rent Romus material a few nights back, I showed up knowing I had to play my copy of The Abstractions' "Sonic Conspiracy," but as usual, had very little else in the way of a plan. I've been listening to a lot of minimalist work lately, so I decided to mix things up for myself and play work that is quite lush in comparison. This week, I am especially impressed by Brekekekexkoaxkoax's "We Used To Be Such Good Friends" album, and my esteem for Justin Hardison's "My Fun" project continues to grow. My tentative plan for next week is to feature some noise works. I've been holding back the noise lately; I feel it is nearly time for it to make a reappearance. This week's show was very nice. Due to the weary state of the previous DJ, I was able to begin the program thirty minutes early, making this a three-hour broadcast. As always, the "neither-day-nor-night" twilight land my show inhabits was the perfect setting for my unconsious to play DJ. With a bit of hindsight, its easy to see that this broadcast was one of transformation, both real and imagined, physical and apparent. I was especially pleased to again broadcast the Pogus Productions release of Rune Lindblad's "Death of the Moon," a fine electroacoustic album I never tire of hearing. This week's show was an improvisational session. I had the kind fortune to be joined in the Hi-Life Room by my former co-host, Tony Youngblood. Years back, we hosted an hour-long improvisational radio program together. With the exeception of a very few tracks, almost everything in this week's playlist was mixed, layered, looped, and used to create a greater "whole." I provided siren whistles, traditional whistling, no-input mixing board, cassette loops, tambourine, and balloon. This week's show went very well. I continued my unconcious musings on fractured communication, mis-dialogues, and shouting into the wind. To emphasize my point (to myself, I suppose) a caller phoned during Denis Smalley's "Piano Nets" (from the Empreintes DIGITALes release "Impacts intérieurs") to inquire about whether or not I was depressed-- the caller was sure that the "depressing" and "horrible" sounds emerging from her radio were sure signs of an impending radio personality's break with reality. I assured her that I was in good mental health (maybe a BIT of a stretch), but that I wasn't planning on trying to shake hands with an oncoming train anytime soon. She ended our conversation with hopes that I would play something "upbeat". As you can see from the playlist, I guess she considers the more-or-less melodic whole tone sounds of "Piano Nets" to be depressing, but the three-part near-industrial cutup that is Luc Ferrari's "Visages V" suite to be upbeat... or she had given up, and gone out to find the nearest train, who knows?

Coming up November 17th will be a very special broadcast of "It's Too Damn Early". As some of you may recall, I once co-hosted (really!) a free-form sound collage radio program at another radio station. For the broadcast on the 17th, my former co-host Tony Youngblood will again be joining me for a two-and-a-half hour effort at throwing odd sounds into the ether. This week, I took the opportunity to musically reflect on the concept of a Universal Library, and the Library of Babel; two ideas which have long gripped me in one form or another. I am struck by the ties between the paradoxical uselessness of such a library, and our own attempts to communicate complex ideas musically. Therefore, this week's program is filled with communication across the continuum-- soliloquies, revelations, lectures, failures, and hopelessly idealistic messages-in-a-bottle. This week's show was very nice. A number of artists had their "It's Too Damn Early" debut this week-- Xiu Xiu, Ume, and Kreamy from DEATHBOMB ARC label's seriously weird "Why Is Anything Forbidden 2" compilation, along with label-mates Rose for Bohden, and Yuma Nora-- whose wonderfully different "Red Train Graphing the Sunset of All" fit in perfectly with the not-night-not-day time slot of ITDE. The HAUNTED TRAIL label, recently burned in an act of US Postal incompetance, contributed Nightcrawler's "Dedicated to the Nocturnal Hood Wanderers", an interestingly organic and lower-key take on the noise genre. Capping off Nightcrawler's somnambulant scree was Austin drone-maker Hotel Hotel, with the brand new release "allheroesareforeverbold". Hotel Hotel last contributed to "It's Too Damn Early" nearly 4 years ago, as Pablo St. Chaos. Similarly, New York sound artist Grundik Kasyansky made his return to ITDE territory with the CREATIVE SOURCES release "Light and Roundchair". Today's show went very well. I was especially looking forward to broadcasting, because the past few weeks' shows have been very rewarding for me. Although I have always tried to treat the program as an artform rather than a simple radio show, I believe that the past few weeks have personally shown me how much my skills have improved since starting. I suppose it is like many other artforms, in that there is a level of complexity which is mostly hidden from the audience-- the ideas not followed, feelings during creation, the mistakes that are interpreted as intentional... It is all very, very interesting to me. More simply, however, a lot of new music had an "It's Too Damn Early" debut this week. "Math-lete" artist Rothkamm started the show off by hammering home the concept of "intricate" with his latest release "FB02" from FLUX RECORDS. Two fine improvisational works from the RYPAS RECORDS release "Strings" featuring violinist Mike Khoury were the only recordings I knew for sure that I would be playing today-- "Strings" is an incredibly accessible work of improvisational music, intimate in character, but also possessing the depth necessary for numerous repeated listens. Franz Hautzinger and Mazen Kerbaj's release "Abu Tarek" from CREATIVE SOURCES RECORDINGS was also quite interesting, and surprisingly, provided a good jumping-off point for listeners as Finland's Keijo hoisted the freak flag high on LAST VISIBLE DOG release "For a While". LVD supplied me with ample opportunity to poke fun at their trickle/flood approach to releasing albums, with Yermo's self-titled release (I'm calling it the Yermo "White Album"), and Birchville Cat Motel's stupendous 3-disc live retrospective "Curved Surface Destroyer" smearing out oddball tones and drones during the final set of this week's broadcast. Finally, a throw-away Kid 606 track from the REVOLVER sampler to hop up the kiddies before the children's show. That makes many, many consecutive weeks of starting the children off with something bizarre for their morning, ha ha.

This show was a lot of fun, and lovely as well. Everything flowed very well together, and I was also happy to be able to present new recordings. Peter Wright's "Pariahs Sing Om" album (a LAST VISIBLE DOG 3-disc release) was given control over the majority of the first set, with a fellow LVD release from New Zealand artist Stephan Neville joining mid-way through the show. The Dan Joseph Ensemble's release "Archaea" (from New York's fine MUTABLE MUSIC label) offered up the fine "Percussion and Strings" piece. Finally, experimental champions and "It's Too Damn Early" favorites POGUS PRODUCTIONS provided five amazing works from Anla Courtis's "Tape Works" album. And hey, I got to start the show with Gen Ken Montgomery's recording "Laminator Model 2291" for an unbelieving studio guest. It's always gratifying to see a jaw drop.

Although this week's show was quite nice in terms of the music broadcast, flow, and general "feel", I was somewhat disappointed to spend the evening without a single additional pledge made towards WDBX's Spring Membership Drive. As I predicted, things went much better this week. The new studio is quite nice-- mood lighting, an absence of kitchen cabinets converted into broadcast furniture, a new mic windscreen, etc... So I'm pretty happy with it. The new CD players are another matter, though. I don't think I like them too much. They're a bit finicky, and not terribly user-friendly. On the plus side, they haven't shocked me yet, or tried to eat any of my discs. Sorry for the delay on this playlist. At the time of broadcast, I wasn't able to keep a playlist, so I have had to recreate it by memory. As for the show, it was a real trip. When I got to the studio, I found that all our equipment had been replaced with backup equipment. These are the CD players, etc, that are used when something breaks. Ironically, they are probably the most broken of all units at the station. Because we have been in the process of rebuilding our main studio (which I will be broadcasting from on my next show!) all our good, working stuff was in THERE. So I got stuck with players not recognizing discs, not letting you have your disc back, eating your CDR, shocking me, turning off, and everything else. Needless to say, I wasn't a happy camper. So I decided to go ahead and just cut loose. I already knew I'd be doing something different for April Fool's Day anyhow, though I had intended a broadcast of the most audacious and "avant" tracks I could muster. Instead, listeners were treated to an outrageous medley of noises and blends. I also managed to work in a couple local radio station's streaming broadcasts, and my various threats about throwing the CD players out the front foor. All in all, a great and chaotic show! Please realize not all songs were played in their entirety, or were heavily mixed with other songs. This week's show was very nice. When I first came into the studio, I wasn't exactly certain what music I wanted to play, but after listening to "Tomorrow Never Knows" as covered by The Unireverse, I managed to get things sorted out. Debut entries this week included Monotract's "Live in Japan" album on Public Eyesore, The Choir Boys "With Strings" album on pfMentum, the Ambiances Magnetiques release of Tim Brady's "Three Cities in the Life of Dr. Norman Bethune", a self-release from Metek "Stone Cold Grey", and the album "Electric Eel" by Koichi Makigami on Tzadik. In other news, I am considering producing a special broadcast of "ITDE" that would give sound artists and musicians an opportunity to discuss sound-- their dreams about sound, the abstract nature of soundwork, and their thoughts on sound's nature-- basically, a symposium on sound. I am currently hoping to use the computer program "Skype" to connect with artists, so I can record (and later, broadcast) these dialogues. This week's show went very well. I attempted to follow another theme, "Sounds Dreaming," a phrase which had been running through my head for some time now. Internally, I had conceived of this as being related to the mysterious give-and-take process of music making, where sometimes sounds seem to be somewhat more in control than composers or musicians. "Sounds Dreaming" also makes me consider what sort of music that sounds themselves like to create, and what sound is like when we are not around to perceive it. More than once, the sounds got the upper hand of this broadcast, but always with enlightening results. I hope you enjoyed it as well. I am also including last week's playlist (3-4-06), which is very short, as it was comprised of only a few long tracks. I was truly physically exhausted that week, but failed to realize it before commencing my broadcast. Playlist for "ITDE" 2/25/06:

This week's show went very well. I attempted to keep things on track with a general theme. In this case, the theme was a reflection upon decay, and pianos. I know that sounds silly, but with the week I experienced-- William Basinsky popping up in a variety of discussions, reading a book about John Cage's early piano compositions, losing a hard drive, learning about decaying cassette loop art, etc-- well, the show starts to make more sense. Topping it all off was a listener "request" (rather, a bit of musing, I suspect) wondering about the sound of a piano on fire. Even though I didn't have any flaming pianos handy, I did have a nice recording of one being dropped by a crane. I also played more of the fantastic Danielle Palardy Roger release "Bruiducoeur, prieres des infideles" from the ever-amazing Ambiances Magnetiques label. I'm not so sure it didn't scare the pants off the little boy who came to the studio to help his mother with the children's music show that follows my broadcast! This week's show featured an absolutely amazing album from Danielle Palardy Roger, "Bruiducoeur, prieres des infideles", currently available through the Ambiances Magnetiques label. Also making their appearance were some fantastic recordings from Zeena Parkins' "Isabelle", and the wonderful song "Omk" from Cuneiform label artists Zaar. With all the good sounds, I felt inspired to participate with some improvisation of my own. I ended up using the station's webcast as a long delay, running the webcast back into the show itself. I may be exploring this idea more in the future, as it rendered some fascinating results. This week's show was very nice. I made a sincere effort to play a lot of music that would be new to the show, which is always fun. The First Person Records release of Fickle's "He Rules an Eroding Plain" blew me away. Great stuff! I am also enjoying the Nete track "Pangolin" on their Long Arms Records release. Finally, Eloine made a long (and second, for those of you who are counting) appearance, with the wonderful "Dangling Filaments" from the Foxglove023 release, "Community"... Next week, I will be beginning my two-week vacation set of shows. These are my once-a-year treat to myself, where I can play anything I want, regardless of genre. This is your chance to hear the bizarre lurching sound a record collection makes when it goes haywire. I hope you'll tune in. Finally, I am trying to secure an on-air interview with the head of Mothers Against Noise, a.k.a., MAN. While I definately don't subscribe to their outlandish and often uninformed views on noise, I can't let the idea go, especially when I read that the Masami Akita (a vegan, no less) is the Anti-God. It should be an interesting show, I'll let everyone know when there is more information. I was very pleased to be able to broadcast a "Lovely" (forgive my label punning) and exciting opera by Robert Ashley this week, as well as recordings from Mudboy-- both artists who are helping stretch the boundaries of my show-- albeit from quite opposite ends. While listening to a another radio show this week, it occurred to me how unique "It's Too Damn Early" actually is. Rather than being located in a cultural hotspot like San Francisco, Toronto, or Paris (or any number of other fascinating places), I broadcast from Southern Illinois... which, while not without its share of artistically inclined citizenry, it is also the sort of place where Lynyrd Skynrd cancels on your state fair two years in a row. No kidding. Obviously, this isn't the sort of place where people find Stockhausen or Pierre Schaeffer old news. It's my feeling that what could be called ignorance could also be thought of as something unspoiled-- a radio laboratory, a control group, a fresh canvas, new ideas and reactions colored by today's values and sensitivities! I am still having trouble with my other computer, so the website has not been quite up to date. Nonetheless, I am very happy to announce that the ITDE site has been visited more than 1000 times! As I recently told the station manager at WDBX, obviously, someone is listening. This week's show was very nice. I managed to make it through almost all the material I had wanted to play, and even discovered some cool sections of recordings I had already played many times! In September, I will be hosting a listening party for the "PSIKCLOPS" release from Free Matter for the Blind. There will be a full presentation of the album, and a chance to hang out at WDBX. Playlist for "ITDE" 8/20/05:

This last show was quite nice. I really had a good feeling about the way everything mixed together, and was also able to take some fascinating and positive phone calls from interested listeners. While I truly feel that much of what I do at the station is primarily for me, it is pleasant to be able to connect with listeners and hear how they are approaching the show, and what they are getting out of the experience. Thanks for your calls. At the moment, I am having some computer trouble involving a defective heat sink. Until this is fixed, I will not be updating the web page, as the files are located on that particular computer. In another suprisingly social move, I helped staff a booth at the local university's "Welcome" night festival, handing out flyers and information to LOTS of people. Greetings, all (and my apologies to those who received the various screwed-up incarnations of this playlist!) --

This week's show was a little different. I tried to work in a few discs that I have neglected in the past-- most times because a new release had eclisped its arrival. I was also trying to work much more with my "unthinking" theory of song selection, where I try to allow my unconcious to select and make interesting transitions. I think many worked out surprisingly well. I'll be continuing my journey in this area in the coming weeks. For those of you in the Southern Illinois area, I will be at SIUC's Welcome Day. I enjoyed expanding the variety of music available on "It's Too Damn Early" by including unique and exciting artists such as Davenport, and labels like Last Visible Dog. Any time that I can add greater complexity and detail to my listeners' picture of experimental sound, I'm pleased. I was also quite happy to find a few opportunities to work in some artistic mixing, especially with recordings from Michael Graeve, Renato Rinaldi, and Ambiences Magnetique release #136 "Taxonomy: A Global Taxonomical Machine," which I am finding to be EXCELLENT. This show was a lot of fun to do, but didn't have very good flow. I think this show is a good example of how there truly is an additional artistic element to being a DJ-- in this case, I played great music, but didn't have that spark to pull it all together in my usual manner. Playlist for "ITDE" 6/18/05: (The "Merzshow", four-hour broadcast covering for Mama C.'s "Kids Kamp")

This week's special four-hour "Merzshow" featuring Japan's premiere noise artist Masami Akita was a lot of fun. It actually was kind of an endurance test as well, four hours of continuous Merzbow is both draining and exhilirating! I am developing some new features for the "ITDE" website, including one that I am truly excited about: SHOW COMMENTARY. These audio commentaries will be available for download at the site, starting some time after the next broadcast. I plan to record them on-the-fly at random times through my radio shows as a means of commenting and reviewing the music I play. I may also interview people who drop by, toss out ideas, whatever. They will most likely be fairly short, but still very interesting.     Today's show went very well. I had a caller who told me that he and a group of friends regularly listen to the program, but confessed that they "didn't get it," despite enjoying the new sounds. I really appreciated his comments; I ended up taking about 45 minutes to musically explore some of the ideas I told him about on the phone. For me, this is a very rewarding aspect of broadcasting this music-- reaching someone who is at the junction where they can be positively or negatively affected about hearing a greater musical world.
    Also very interesting, but slightly more personal... I will be participating in Placard #8, a streaming music festival being broadcast from the Isle of Ameland, located near the Netherlands. My broadcast will consist partially of cold-call improvisations, in where I have recorded computer-assisted phone calls made to random online users of Skype, an online phone service.
