Welcome to Campground Stables

History of Campground Stables

Welcome to Campground Stables. Our stable barns were originally constructed to house harness race horses and did so for many years. The original owner, W.T. Frederking, was very successful in the harness racing business as well as other business ventures. One of those other ventures was the establishment of The Altamont Campgrounds which was located just down the road from the stable barns. At that time the stables and the campground were the only entities located in, what is now called, Town and Country Subdivision. Mr. Frederking started developing the subdivision in the early 1970's and it soon "grew-up" around the stables. As the subdivision grew, the campground disappeared but the original road to the campground site has been named Campground Road. Our horse motel is not intended to be an actual campground, though we have room for trailer drops and a couple of self-contained campers. Our name, Campground Stables, is intended to honor both the Altamont Campgrounds of the past and the original horse barns still in use today. The stable barns have changed ownership a few times but they are currently "back in the family" as Kathy is the daughter of W.T. Frederking.

What We Offer

You'll like the convenience! Just one-half mile south of I-70, we are easy to find. We have large, clean, well constructed stalls (16x16) with turnouts, automatic waterers, a wash bay and plenty of pasture. Adjacent to the barns is a fishing pond and a small picnic area. Of course, there are motels and restaurants (some deliver) at the I-70 exit. Our house is located on the property and close to the barns. We are available to watch over the stables and to help meet the needs of our guests. Whether your horse is in need of just a rest stop or an overnight stay, you are welcome at Campground Stables!

Location

Take the Altamont exit off of I-70 (exit 82), go south (left) one-half-mile to Campground Road (watch for Town and Country Subdivision sign). Turn right on Campground Road. We are the second drive on the left.
